You keep talking about portland. And i keep getting confused , theres two or three portlands right? I know now you were talking about portland maine. But i saw the post and was like, portland oregon? Nah, we are pretty stylish. Well not really, but not badly dressed either. Just all these trendy hipster yuppy lots.
According to wikipedia, there are close to 20 Portlands in the US alone, so yeah it can get confusing.
Portland, OR reminded me of San Francisco actually, and I thought the vibe was really cool when I was last there a while ago. Gotta be careful with trendy, hipster though…
I love Portland and like any small city it's no style Mecca but I feel like with Fore St. Restaurant and that Barbour store and the one next to it, and having been to a lot of cities, it's difficult to rank it the eight most unstylish city in the country. But yeah, Portland's awesome regardless of its sprezziness factor.
I would tend to agree with you. I think many people in Portland and the surrounding towns (which is wear I grew up) have a style that is unique to New England, and there is something very familiar and comforting about that. I remember seeing muted colorful sweatshirts with flannels, birks/clarks, and dad jeans on a lot of folks, and when I see people in the city wearing pieces of this look, it definitely makes me smile. I still try and draw inspiration from my time in Maine.
I think that this familiarity with the general style in Maine has biased us in favor of that particular aesthetic though - many people would probably think Portlanders look like shit. However, as I said, I’m glad the city is getting any sort of recognition at all. Someone had to be considering the style of Portland in the first place for the city to even make it on this list.
As an aside, I still remember going to Fore Street and Street & Co. growing up - those spots are amazing. The food in Portland is one of its most defining features for sure. And I would argue that, going by the definition of the word, it has a particular sprezzatura all its own.
Travel and Leisure magazine apparently rates Portland, ME the eighth worst dressed city in the country???
Have you ever been to Portland!?!? It’s a fantastic small city with tons of things to do, but it’s no style Mecca. Mostly just folks dressed in standard NE fare. I wore a blazer in town the last time I was there and felt odd.
That being said, it’s great that it’s earned enough clout to be even considered for such a list.
Hi! I´m starting to get into the men´s wear world, but I have trouble finding some casual shoes, what do you recommend for some weekend outfit? thanks!
Depends on what your particular style is, but I personally recommend some sneakers like Vans AOs or Supergas for casual wear and maybe some snuff suede loafers for the evening. Sanders makes some nice suede loafers for cheap (Aldwych), while Alden has good ones on the higher end. I’m wearing choco suede tassels right now and will on weekends too, but they seem to be a bit more polarizing.
