You can probably go with a mid to dark brown blucher of some kind for versatility - either plain or cap toe. $300 should get you something goodyear welted, and if you have some time, I would recommend either Meermin (check out the Nantes or the Karan), Pediwear (Barker Nairn), or Herring (Baldwin or Burlington).
